DON’T PUT GOD IN A BOX

Israel went into battle believing they had everything they needed. They had their history. They had their religious leaders. They had the Ark of the Covenant. They even had enough excitement to shout until the ground shook.

But they were missing the most important thing: a right relationship with God.

In 1 Samuel 4, Israel tries to use the Ark of the Covenant almost like a spiritual good-luck charm. Instead of repenting and seeking God, they bring the ark into battle and assume God will give them victory.

They wanted God’s power without God’s presence, God’s blessing without obedience, and God’s victory without repentance.

We can fall into the same trap today.

We can trust in church attendance, traditions, programs, committees, worship styles, Bible knowledge, or religious routines while neglecting a genuine daily walk with Christ. There is nothing wrong with these things, but none of them can substitute for knowing, obeying, and depending upon the Lord.

Israel had the ark.

They had the shout.

They had the history.

They had the confidence.

What they needed was God.

This message from 1 Samuel 4:1–22 challenges us to ask a serious question:

Am I trusting Christ, or am I trusting my familiarity with Christian things?

Church programs cannot save us.

Traditions cannot save us.

Religious excitement cannot save us.

Christ can.
